The Population Census in Hong Kong is conducted by the Hong Kong Government, and is held evey 10 years. Therefore, the latest census was held in 2011.

 

According to the census data (2011), there were 451,183 non-Chinese people in Hong Kong, which makes up about 6.4% of the Hong Kong population. They are so-called the "ethnic minorities", including Indonesians, Filipinos, Whites, Japanese, Koreans, Indians, Pakistanis, Nepalese etc. One thing should be noted that Indonesian and Filipinos constitute the greatest proportion of the population of non-Chinese people in Hong Kong, which are 29.6% (133,337 people) and 29.5%(133,018 people) respectively. We have focused on Southeast Asian minorities in this project.

 

On the other hand, the most common language spoken by ethinic minorities at home is English, which accounts for 44.2%, followed by Cantonese at 31.7%.
