Language Transmission of Indonesian Workers in Hong Kong

 

 

 

 

For language transmission, two interviewees, Ida and Sumi, revealed that though they normally communicate in Indonesian, they prefer their children to learn English to guarantee the future career prospect when they grow up. On the other hand, Sidi said she does not want to teach her future children English since she thinks that being able to speak Indonesian is sufficient. Heny said she may teach her future children English but only after they grow up a bit more, and she said she had no clear planning about that so far. In addition, we knew some information about English teaching in Indonesia: students in Indonesia start learning English in primary school or secondary school but the time allocated to English is very little. Interviewees had English lesson once a week and the duration of lesson was one hour only.  Though English is regarded as important in Indonesia, it seems that this cannot be reflected through the English proficiency of our interviewees. English is not attached with much importance in Indonesia educational system. From the perspective of the interviewees, English might be a language with mere instrumental usage for work.
